Many Ukrainians start their day with coffee, and some drink it throughout the day. The consumption of this drink has become a ritual, it is drunk during meetings in coffee shops and when relatives and friends are invited for coffee. Coffee competes with tea for the title of the most consumed drink in the world after ordinary water. In order to improve the taste of coffee, more precisely, to reveal all its notes, various ingredients are added to coffee.

Since coffee has been cultivated since ancient times and occupies an important place in many world cultural traditions, mankind has invented many ways to prepare this drink and many flavors that can be given to it.

Ukrainians started drinking "seasoned" coffee in the second half of the 19th century. In Kyiv, there was a chain of coffee shops owned by the Warsaw emigrant Franciszek Holombert, whose specialty was coffee served with ice cream and candied fruit.

Coffee was served not only with food supplements, but also with spiritual food. In the Kiev pastry shop of the Swiss Semadeni, a fresh newspaper was served with coffee. The tradition of reading the press over a cup of coffee was very popular in the past, and is also widespread today, although paper newspapers have long since replaced the screens of gadgets.

Here is a small list of additives that will help reveal the taste of coffee:

  • First of all, these are various spices. You can add and combine cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, bay leaf, cumin, star anise to the drink during preparation. It is important that they are in moderation - spices should emphasize the aroma of coffee, and not kill its taste. If you need to grind the spices according to the recipe, it should be done immediately before cooking.
  • You can add various syrups to coffee, which, in fact, are offered in coffee shops. Popular syrups include berry, maple, mint, and caramel. Maple syrup perfectly complements the taste of coffee, and mint syrup will give the drink interesting notes of freshness.
  • Lovers of sweets add tender marshmallows to coffee.
  • Try coffee with honey or agave juice - these are natural sweeteners that give coffee a unique taste.
  • Nuts - chopped and roasted hazelnuts, peanuts, almonds, walnuts - favorably shade the taste of coffee.
  • Of course, chocolate will perfectly complement the taste of coffee. By combining these two products, we will get a tart and at the same time soft drink. Chocolate can be added to coffee in the form of cocoa powder, chocolate shavings or chocolate syrup.
  • Salt can change the usual taste of coffee, it neutralizes the bitter taste in coffee and helps to reveal its taste more deeply.
  • Some people add oil to coffee to soften its taste. With it, the taste of the drink will become gentler and more pleasant.
  • Coffee with butter exists in the traditions of many peoples of the world. Thanks to the addition of butter to coffee, the drink acquires a velvety creamy taste and a soft aroma.
  • In addition, a great addition to coffee is red pepper, which gives coffee an unusual aroma and a little spiciness. The main thing when adding pepper is not to overdo it. Grind a few red peppercorns in a coffee grinder and add to the drink.
  • You can add citrus zest to coffee, then the drink will have an unsurpassed aroma of orange, mandarin or lemon.
